Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out on the land to the west of Hammonds Ridge and to the east of the Tescos supermarket in Burgess Hill, West Sussex by Archaeology South East, a division of the Institute for Applied Archaeology at UCL. The site, which is being developed for the construction of 12 residential houses, was monitored as the ground was reduced and when the footing trenches for the properties were dug. The site consisted of a layer of made ground covering a yellow brown clay natural. In the area of plots 4 and 5, a buried topsoil was found sealed by c.400mm of redeposited yellow brown clay. This layer contained fragments of post medieval ceramic building material. No other archaeological features, artefacts or ecofacts were found during the monitoring of this project. |
