Abstract: |
Headland Archaeology excavated a systematic network of archaeological evaluation trenches within the proposed development area at the southern edge of Hereford. The evaluation trenches were positioned to target both geophysical anomalies and areas of interest identified during the Test Pitting phases of archaeological works, conducted within the site. The purpose of the evaluation trenches was to establish a greater understanding of the archaeological deposits occurring within the site in order to inform later stages of the proposed project. The evaluation trenches within the proposed site identified a surviving archaeological landscape, with a range of features from the Mesolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman periods which indicate that the area still contains important archaeological information, despite the effects of modern agricultural activity. Five distinct zones of archaeological activity were recorded during the evaluation. |
