Abstract:
A 3-year programme of archaeological excavation and building recording currently in its 2nd year. The work is being undertaken as part of a field school run by the University of Sheffield. The school will be staffed by a combination of professional archaeologists from Wessex Archaeology and academics from the Department of Archaeology. The site is located at the site of a large manor house built c. 1525 on the site of a medieval hunting lodge. In around 1708 the house was largely demolished, the site then became a hamlet with industrial activity including pottery manufacture and coal mining. In 1890 all structures except the original manor ruins were cleared. The first year of excavations were carried out with ARCUS (Archaeological Research and Consultancy at the University of Sheffield). A total of 4 trenches were excavated, 3 of which (Trenches 11-13) were located within the south grange, these exposed cellars which may relate to the 16th century manor house. The fourth trench (Trench 14) exposed the base of a possible polygonal tower. Excavations in the second year were carried out with Wessex Archaeology (Sheffield) and also comprised 4 trenches (Trenches 15-18) located along the south grange and inner courtyard. Pottery kiln workshops and a possible early coal shaft were uncovered. At the time of writting (September 2010) the project is in a post-excavation phase prior to its third and final year of fieldwork.
