Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Sheffield City Council to undertake an archaeological evaluation, watching brief and historic building recording on land at Nursery Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire to inform a flood defence scheme proposed along the banks of the River Don. The most significant archaeological remains were uncovered in Trench 1. The trench revealed the well-preserved remains of a cementation furnace, consisting of two cementation chests with surviving upright walls coated with a layer of slag and fuel. The internal sandstone and external fire brick flue system was also uncovered. It is anticipated that substantial remains consisting of the stoke holes and ash pits of the cementation furnace remain intact beneath. The level of preservation of the cementation furnace is exceptionally good and places the Nursery Street structure as one of the best preserved cementation furnaces in the country. It is considered that the remains at Nursery Street are of national, if not international, archaeological significance. The historic building survey was undertaken at the same time and examined the northern wall of 31-33 Nursery Street. The survey identified elements of one of the first buildings on this plot of land, shown on early 19th-century historic maps. The survey also confirmed that a trapezoidal shaped wall scar in that wall was a remnant of the cementation furnace structure uncovered in Trench 1.
