Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at Hardham Priory, Hardham, Pulborough, West Sussex NGR 503395 117115, a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SM 29279). The work was undertaken on the 20th April 2009 on behalf of the Benjamin and Beauchamp. A single test pit, measuring 1.5 metres in length and 1 metre in width, was excavated in the location of the 'kitchen wing'. A brick floor was encountered at a maximum height of 8.55 m OD within the test pit. A brick floor, dating to the Late Medieval or Early Post-Medieval period was uncovered at the bas of the test pit. The floor was covered by successive layers of rubble and soil from periods of destruction and abandonment of this part of the priory. Large quantities of CBM (roof tiles and bricks) and masonry was recovered from these layers. |
