Abstract: |
In March 2016 Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) undertook a trial trench evaluation at land off Bury Road, Wortham, Suffolk. The evaluation preceded the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. Previous investigations within and around the site have encountered multi-period remains including evidence for a Roman road and Iron Age and Anglo-Saxon occupation. Wortham Green, immediately to the north of the site, is also believed to have been a focus of medieval settlement activity, with remains of this date having been found in the immediate vicinity. In the event, the evaluation encountered evidence spanning the Romano-British to post-medieval periods. Of particular note is a quantity of Roman (mid 1st to early 2nd century AD) pottery, particularly from Ditch F1077 (Trench 1), with soot on the exterior of one vessel indicating possible domestic activity within the immediate environs. A number of medieval and post-medieval features were also encountered. |
