Abstract: |
Shallow excavations were undertaken in the courtyard of Craigmillar Castle, to allow new surfacing to be carried out. Bedrock was exposed in a few areas, but where seen was fine grained sandstone, an excellent building material. This is likely to have been used for much of the construction of the site in all its periods. Outside the courtyard the exploitation of what is evidently an E-W ridge of this bedrock can be seen for the site of the original tower. Along the S limit of the Castle in particular is a low cliff line, with the masonry following its edge. While likely to be less dramatic on the N side of the site, the fact that bedrock was only really exposed along the base of the tower demonstrates that it sits on the summit of a low ridge. These excavations uncovered the upper deposits on an interesting and complex site that has seen little modern disturbance. Although the shallow nature of the excavations made it difficult to fully interpret the many features exposed, this work has demonstrated the significant archaeological potential of the site. |
