Abstract: |
Rookery Lane lies on the rising ground to the west of the River Witham, outside the historic city of Lincoln and its earlier suburbs. It has probably fallen within the city's agricultural and industrial hinterland throughout most of its history; pottery is known to have been manufactured in the vicinity in the late Roman period. Residential development commenced in the area in the late 19th and early 20th century, but the majority of development took place in the inter-war period, chiefly in the form of detached and semi-detached properties for the middle classes. Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out during all contractors groundworks associated with the construction of the bungalows and garages. No archaeologically significant features, deposits or finds were encountered. |
