Abstract:
The Swaledale Big Dig is a community archaeology project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund at Fremington, Grinton and Reeth. The main research objectives were to identify the location and layout of medieval settlements and markets, to understand the pattern of settlement prior to the Norman Conquest and identify population changes through analysis of pottery regression. Over 160 people were involved over 2 years in digging 50 one metre square test pits. Finds included glass, clay pipes, animal bones and more than 4,000 pieces of pottery dating from the Roman to Modern periods. Metal finds included horseshoes, an ox shoe, clog irons, tools, a medieval key and an early medieval lock. Other activities included the formation of a Local History Group, documentary research and the study of aerial photography and lidar images. Geophysical and topographical surveys were carried out and an excavation was undertaken of the Western Grinton Dyke with Scheduled Monument Consent. We worked with local schools and ran 24 courses and 11 guided walks. In total over 500 people joined in Big Dig activities. Little or no evidence has been found of Roman, Romano British or Anglo Saxon occupation but the sites of abandoned medieval settlements were identified at Fremington and Grinton together with evidence that Swaledale suffered heavily in the 14th and 15th centuries as a result of the Great Famine, Scots raids and later the Black Death. Overall the project has made a worthwhile contribution to our understanding of the heritage of Swaledale.
