Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Kier Construction to undertake an archaeological evaluation at Hilltop Primary School, Ditchling Hill, Crawley, West Sussex centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) TQ 26350 35670. Planning consent was granted for an extension to the existing primary school, a new hard play area and relocated canopy together with associated hard and soft landscaping works on condition that a programme of archaeological works was undertaken. In consultation with the Senior Archaeological Officer at West Sussex County Council, a total of two trial trenches were positioned across the proposed new hard play area (Area C) to assess the archaeological potential. No archaeological features or deposits of archaeological significance were encountered in the trenches. The stratigraphic sequence revealed evidence of previous landscaping; topsoil had been removed and replaced with made ground deposits to form a level playing field. A layer of subsoil was recorded within both trenches indicating that the natural clay had not been impacted upon by previous landscaping works. |
