Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology Ltd was commissioned by Tomahawk Holdings Ltd to prepare a final report of the archaeological investigations at Aston Hall Hotel, Rotherham. The excavations were conducted in 2007 by ARCUS in partial fulfilment of a condition attached to planning consent for a new building at the hotel complex. The excavations revealed the remains of a medieval structure and associated features, and recovered assemblages of pottery, glass, metalwork, animal bone, clay tobacco pipe, stone tile, shell and ceramic building material. In 2011 Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to carry out the recommendations presented in the Assessment Report and to prepare a final report on the excavations. Wessex Archaeology undertook specialist analyses of the pottery, glass and metal assemblages and carried out documentary research. As a result, the recorded archaeological features have been separated into four dated phases of activity and have been interpreted in an appropriate local context. The excavated structure has been confirmed to be the medieval predecessor of the current Aston Hall (the hotel) - a substantial building sited to the west of the current hotel. The excavated evidence indicates that it was constructed in the 13th or 14th centuries and demolished in the 18th century. Further remains of medieval Aston Hall may survive under the remaining car park to the west of the leisure complex and north of the current Aston Hall Hotel.
