Abstract: |
A total of 12 trenches were excavated during the evaluation. There was considerable variation in the soil sequence across the site, with a deep subsoil to the north and west that overlay archaeological features. Only three of the trenches produced archaeological remains. Trench 2 was the only trench that contained archaeological features including a ditch, a gully and a further irregular shaped cut feature. None of these contained dating evidence. Trenches 3 and 6 contained isolated finds including four sherds of Roman pottery and one prehistoric flint scraper. The potential for further significant archaeological deposits and finds appears to be limited to the north western part of the site around Trench 2. Mitigation excavation comprised a single area 45m by 25m that investigated the ditch in trench 2. No finds were recovered. The ditch appeared to be a field ditch possibly RB in date. |
