Abstract: |
This report presents the results of a desk-based assessment, walkover survey and historic visual impact assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) at Higher Woodley Farm, Lanivet, Cornwall, in advance of the construction of a single 250kW (45m to tip) wind turbine. The proposed turbine would be located in a field probably enclosed from open common grazing land in the post-medieval period, with former open common located to the south into the 20th century. The boundaries of the field in which the turbine is to be located are suggestive of a former drove-way leading off the common. The land holding of Wodelegh was first documented in the early 13th century, and the field-patterns of neighbouring holdings are suggestive of enclosure from medieval strip fields In terms of the wider landscape, the site is located on the gentle north facing slope within a larger-scale plateau-like landform and steep sided valleys, which will serve to diminish the visual scale of the development. In general terms, this part of Cornwall contains a reasonable number of Listed (primarily clustered) Buildings and a reasonable to high number of Scheduled Monuments. Most of the designated heritage assets identified in this survey will not be affected to any great extent; for a number of assets such as the Village of Lanivet and its parish church, a bowl barrow near Castle Hill Farm, Tremore Manor, Bodmin Beacon and the Church of St. Clement will the impact be more pronounced (negative/moderate). Most of the buildings and monuments are insulated from its effects by a combination of local blocking, topography, extant modern intrusions and (seasonally variable) vegetation. With this in mind, the overall impact of the proposed turbine can be assessed as negative/minor to negative/moderate, largely on the basis that the impact of this turbine decreases markedly above 5km. |
