Abstract:
South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) was asked to undertake a desk-based assessment and walkover survey on land west of Martyns Close, Goonhavern, Perranzabuloe, Cornwall. The site is made up of two fields to the south-west of Goonhavern. The eastern boundary of the site flanks late 20th century housing and bungalows. The proposed development site, west of Martyn Close, has little evidence for activity until the post-medieval period, when, by the 1888 OS map the formerly common land had been enclosed into the modern field layout. There is no cartographic evidence for any buildings or structures having previously stood on the site, and the surrounding land only shows sparse habitation until the late 20th century. There are few recorded archaeological sites in the area on the Cornwall HER and no features of archaeological interest were identified during the walkover. On that basis and given that the fields are later 19th century enclosures (recently enclosed land), the archaeological potential of the site can be assessed as low. It is important to note that this is not a visual impact assessment, and makes no attempt to quantify the potential effect of any proposed development on the setting of nearby and adjacent heritage assets.
