Abstract:
Allen Archaeology Limited (hereafter AAL) was commissioned by Press and Starkey to undertake an archaeological evaluation by trial trenching on land off Argents Mead in Hinckley, Leicestershire prior to the submission of a planning application for construction of a new leisure centre. The proposed development site is located in an area of some archaeological interest where the 12th century Benedictine Hinckley Priory was once situated and to the north of the site is Hinckley Castle. Previous archaeological works on site showed evidence of a possible medieval pit and 19th century garden terracing associated with the demolished 19th century vicarage in the west end of the site. There was also evidence of 20th century levelling and landscaping for a former tennis court and later council buildings. The evaluation showed no sign of medieval activity. Three undated features, a large pit, a narrow shallow linear and a brick path are likely remnants of the vicarage garden features. On top of these features were thick layers of landscaping deposits sealed by either topsoil or bedding layer combined with a tarmac surface. It suggests that the proposed development will have some impact upon 19th century remains but that the chance of surviving earlier archaeology and the impact on such seem low within the evaluated area.
