Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation comprising two trial trenches was carried out on land at Sutton Cheney Wharf, Sutton Cheney, Leicestershire, prior to the installation of a treatment plant, a new cess pit and rising main. The proposed work lies within an area of archaeological sensitivity with limekilns depicted on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of the area. Prehistoric and Roman sites have also been recorded within the vicinity. The evaluation revealed heavily disturbed ground consisting of layers of dumped industrial deposits in the form of cinder and coal and a mixture of deliberate levelling or sealing layers of imported material. Remains of a buried topsoil that had been recently covered by deposits of demolition material forming a hardstanding surface were also exposed. The natural silty clay substrate was encountered approximately 1m below the current ground surface. |
