Abstract:
On the 3rd April 2014, Archaeological Solutions Ltd carried out an archaeological trial trench evaluation at land adjacent to allotments, Semer Road/ The Street, Whatfield, Suffolk (NGR TM 0222 4638). The evaluation was undertaken in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning approval for the residential development of the site and was required by the local planning authority based on advice from Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service Conservation Team (SCC AS-CT). In the event, the earliest finds were a struck flint (end scraper) from Ditch F1003 of possible early Neolithic date, and a fragment of Roman tegula roof tile from Subsoil L1001 in Trench 3. Ditch F2005 (Tr.3) yielded a relatively large assemblage of medieval (11th to 12th century) pottery, but this is mostly abraded. Sherds of medieval (11th to 12th century) pottery were found within the subsoil (L1001) in Trench 3. Again the pottery is mostly abraded. An undated pit (F1007) and medieval ditch (F1005) were recorded in Trench 3. An undated ditch (F1003) was recorded in Trench 2. Trench 1 lacked features. Features were most common in the south-east of the site, towards The Green.
