Abstract: |
This project comprised a Level 2 archaeological survey and watching brief at Ward End Weir, Sheffield. The work was undertaken on behalf of the Environment Agency during improvement works to the River Don and was required by the South Yorkshire Archaeology Service (SYAS). The work follows a Heritage Statement prepared by Nexus Heritage (2015). The date of construction of the weir is unknown, however it is thought to have acted as part of a head goit for the Old Park Corn Mill (SMR No: 01685), located to the south of the weir and built c.1673. It seems likely that the weir dates to around this time, and the weir is evident on the first detailed map of the area dated to 1795. The weir was observed to be in moderate condition, although did display signs of damage. Within the wider landscape, a sluice and retaining wall thought to be contemporary with the weir were noted, as well as ancillary structures which are thought to relate to the later development of the site, including the concrete bases of a footbridge and a gantry. The removal of two-thirds of the weir exposed a substantial timber frame constructed upon a gravel bank, over which the stone structure of the weir was built. The weir was well-built, with individual stones measuring up to 3m in length with metal straps fastening many of the stones together. Three methods of construction were observed within the main phase of the weir, which may indicate later modifications or repairs. The remaining section of the weir is confined mostly to the northern side of the river, with one bay remaining on the southern edge. All of the material that was removed from the weir was laid along the edge of the river around the remaining weir in order to control the flow of water to avoid bank erosion. |
