Abstract:
Cornwall Archaeological Unit, Cornwall Council was commissioned by EM in 2014 to produce a Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHAMP) for the A30 from Longrock near Penzance to Innis Downs near Bodmin. This was based on a desk based assessment of the road, coupled with visits to all sites within the Highways Agency Estate and selected sites near the roadline. Condition and management reports were prepared for these sites. The fieldwork was undertaken in November 2014. The A30 follows a long-distance route through Cornwall having at least medieval origins. Between 1769 and 1836, most of it was improved by turnpike trusts. Much of the A30 was dualled and re-aligned during the 20th century, though two sections, between Longrock and St. Erth and Chiverton roundabout and Carland Cross have been only partially improved. The original roadline linked population centres, and influenced the growth of hamlets along its length. By-passing relieved traffic pressure on towns, but removed the raisons d'êtres of the smaller settlements. The modern A30 is largely terrain oblivious, though continues to influence the landscape through which it passes, and imposes an audible presence along its route. Only a small number of cultural heritage features survive within the HA estate, these consisting of a bridge, two Scheduled medieval wayside crosses, a guide stone and several Listed milestones. A written report details the results of the survey and sets out condition reports and management recommendations for the roadline. Updated data was produced for incorporation into the Highways Agency EnviS management database.
