Abstract:
In response to an archaeological condition as a requirement of the planning consent granted by the local planning authority for work at St. Mary's Church, Stotfold, Bedfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by Stotfold PCC to implement a scheme of archaeological monitoring. The project included monitoring the groundworks for a new disabled access to the north aisle entrance. This work involved a general ground reduction both internal and external and included the lowering of the existing church doorway. It was considered that the present investigation could have the opportunity to expand the understanding of the origins and development of the Saxon and medieval settlement at Stotfold and the origins and development of St Mary's Church. The ground reduction on the external area around the north aisle revealed graveyard soil with no significant archaeological features, deposits or finds. However, the excavation did reveal evidence to suggest that the north aisle wall had been underpinned in the Modern Period with the addition of a concrete kneeler course and two courses of Arlesey white brick. This modern underpinning ran for the entire length of the excavated area along the north aisle wall. This was further supported when during the lowering of the doorway it was revealed that the original York Stone entrance steps had also been underpinned with similar material. The internal works within the doorway also revealed another worked York Stone slab within the wall fabric and below the level of the existing entrance steps, suggesting that this could represent part of an earlier phase of construction associated with the church entrance.
