Abstract:
The main house is a Grade II Listed Building (1273033) which lies at the eastern end of the historic hamlet of East Village. The building is described as dating to the late 16th or early 17th century, built of painted render over cob, with a slate roof with ridge stack to left-of-centre and west wall. The house retains some aspects of its original 3-room and through-passage plan, although extensive changes and alterations to the fabric of the building were undertaken during the 19th and 20th centuries. The work was carried out to satisfy condition no. 3 attached to the grant of planning permission granted by East Devon District Council for the demolition of the existing rear extension and erection of replacement single storey extension. The tithe survey of Sandford parish took place in 1843. The map clearly shows the main house prior to the addition of the western range, with the farmyard and a large L-shaped farm building to the south, and extensive orchards to the north and west. The area was mapped by the Ordnance Survey in 1889, when the property was shown in the greatest detail thus far. The western range has been built, while a small outbuilding, presumably the current external toilet, has been added along the northern side of the main house. The existing internal door between the Family Room and the Utility consists of a plain pegged square-headed doorframe. The door is of simple plank construction with strap hinges with spear-headed ends and a plain latch mechanism internally, and an upright door handle with expanded ends externally. All are of late 19th or early 20th century date. The brickwork forming the lower part of the opening consists of late 19th century brick, suggesting the doorway was inserted when the external toilet was built sometime before 1889.
