Abstract: |
An evaluation consisting of five trenches totalling 130 sq. metres, later extended to 145 sq. m, was excavated in October and November 2012. This comprised around 4% of the site. On the basis of this evaluation, an archaeological Watching Brief was requested on the reduction of the access road alongside Trenches 1-3. This was carried out on 6th-7th June 2013. One residual Roman sherd was found, but no other evidence of prehistoric or Roman activity. Short ditches and possibly postholes dating between the late 12th and the early 14th century were found, but do not suggest intensive occupation. The site was part of Broom Farm in the post-medieval period, and buildings dating from the late 18th or early 19th century onwards were found. The scarcity of occupation material suggests that these were probably ancillary farm buildings rather than domestic buildings. |
