Abstract: |
University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) carried out an archaeological evaluation at County Hall, Glenfield, Leicestershire, (SK 5499 0713) from the 20th to 23rd August 2012. Ten trenches were excavated to evaluate an area for a proposed new car park and access road located within a field to the north-east of County Hall. Archaeological features were identified in seven of the ten trenches. The features appear to represent the remains of a Roman field system and associated features and yielded a small assemblage of Late 1st to 2nd century pottery, animal bone and charred plant remains, indicating domestic activity nearby. There is also Roman building material suggesting the presence of a stone-founded building in the area of similar date to the pottery. The remaining three trenches contained no archaeological deposits with the exception of modern field drains. The site archive will be held by Leicestershire County Council under accession number X.A76.2012. |
