Abstract:
In February 2008, ARCUS were commissioned by WSP Environmental on behalf of Maximus to undertake an archaeological buildings survey and structural watching brief at the site of the former Biwater Pipe Works, Clay Cross, Derbyshire, The fieldwork programme was devised following an archaeological buildings appraisal completed by ARCUS in June 2007. The assessment of the surviving standing buildings identified a core group of 18 buildings that related to the mid-19th to early 20th-century works and further recording, including measured survey and medium format and 35mm photography, has been undertaken on these buildings. A targeted structural watching brief during the demolition obtained further information on the buildings, where inaccessibility and structural instability had previously prevented recording. The final results of all this recording are presented within this report. Biwater was a significant example of a large multi-focal industrial site, retaining a number of large 19th-century buildings, most of which continued in their originally intended function. Although the selection of buildings surveyed at Biwater was not exhaustive of the processes undertaken on the site, they were representative of surviving phases of its early development as a centre for pipe production.
