Abstract: |
In September 2017 Cornwall Archaeological Unit (CAU), Cornwall Council undertook a programme of archaeological recording during trenching works associated with a new main sewer at West Carclaze, Penwithick, St. Austell. The Historic Landscape Character of the enclosures is recorded as Anciently Enclosed Land (Farmland Medieval), but this is considered likely to be erroneous and the land is more likely to have been enclosed during the post-medieval period. The area is recorded as containing two sites: MCO354 - Carludden: findspot of a flint arrowhead and MCO2345 - Carludden, Great Barrow Rocks, a place name suggestive of the site of a former Bronze Age barrow. There was potential for prehistoric and medieval sites to survive within the project area, with the scope for the survival of previously unrecorded archaeological sites, organic remains, and artefacts of all periods. The site soil strip was carried out under archaeological supervision. A natural soil profile consisting of the following was recorded across all the areas examined: 0.05m of grass, roots and topsoil overlaid 0.15m of dark sandy grey-brown clay loam, and 0.15m of black-brown clay. This overlaid orange-brown clay (rab): the decayed natural bedrock which had remnant granite grounders protruding through its surface in several areas. These layers were consistent throughout the fields, the only variation recorded being in the depth of the topsoil, which varied from 0.3m to 0.4m. No archaeological features or artefacts were encountered during the course of the watching brief. |
