Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at Powick Bridge, Powick, Worcestershire (NGR SO 83502 52483). It was undertaken on behalf of the Environment Agency, who had created an area from which vehicles can gain closer access to the River Teme to remove flood debris. Deposits were encountered that were likely to have been associated with the 18th and 19th century industrial use of the site, in particular evidence for iron working as part of the Powick Iron Works that is known to have been in existence by the 1720s. In addition, the presence of discreet bands of alluvium and deeper alluvial deposits indicate that the site has been subject to flooding in the post-medieval period, even during times when the site has been used industrially. Levels relating to the Civil War battlefield were not identified during this investigation. Given the dominance of 18th and 19th century finds, and the extensive nature of flood deposits at the site, any deposits contemporary with the Civil War seem likely to be located at least 2m below ground surface along the banks of the Teme. |
