Abstract:
Archaeological investigations were carried out before and during construction of the Brecon to Tirley stretch of the Milford Haven to Tirley pipeline, between 2006 and 2010. Sixteen significant sites were identified, the majority of which were Roman in date, though Bronze Age and late Iron Age remains were also uncovered. These included a Bronze Age cremation cemetery. From the late Iron Age, a bloomsmithing site near Kingstone provided rare evidence of iron working. The results of the project suggested that the Roman conquest did not cause an abandonment of native sites and that by the second century AD, the Welsh Marches consisted of a network of small, enclosed farmsteads. The results of the various stages of the investigations, including desk-based assessments, evaluation trenching, open area excavations and watching brief have been separately assessed and reported; the current project described the results of the subsequent analysis, leading to their forthcoming publication.
