Abstract: |
This report describes the results of an archaeological trial trench evaluation carried out by Pre-Construct Archaeology on land at Paston Reserve, Peterborough (NGR TF 1979 0298) between the 12th and the 28th September 2016. The archaeological work was commissioned by Keepmoat in response to a planning condition attached to residential development with associated access and landscaping. The aim of the work was to characterise the archaeological potential of the proposed development area. The evaluation identified a concentration of archaeological remains in the north of the development area, at the topographically highest point of the site approximately 130m south of the Car Dyke. These archaeological features consisted of concentrations of small pits and postholes and at least three phases of a north to south aligned boundary ditch. Almost all of the features excavated in these trenches produced significant amounts of high-status Roman pottery and CBM. These finds and the nature of the features identified strongly suggest the presence of a Roman settlement of some description in this area of the site. |
