Abstract: |
A Level 3 historic building recording was undertaken in March 2017. The survey studied three buildings which date to the early and late 1840s and are likely to be among the first buildings in the locality to be built on this part of the former South Fields of Leicester. Two additional associated buildings were subjected to a brief survey as they are also part of the development site. The buildings were constructed in a number of phases over a relatively short period of time and reflect the rapid growth and development of the City suburbs during the middle part of the 19th century. The buildings have been used over the years for a wide variety of purposes from offices, dressmakers shop, light engineering works and car dealerships and as such represent the wide variety of industries and business which Leicester has seen. Of particular note was a needle manufacturer who was probably supplying needles to the hosiery trade, one of Leicester's key industries. |
