Abstract:
In August 2017 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation of land at 100 Southgate Street, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 2AQ (NGR TL 859 634).The evaluation was required by Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service Conservation Team (SCC AS-CT), as advisors to the Local Planning Authority, to provide for the initial requirements of a planning condition attached to planning approval (St Edmundsbury Borough Council Planning Approval DC/16/0798/FUL). It is proposed to erect to construct a new housing development of 10 dwellings and undertake external alterations to convert existing offices to residential use. The density of features recorded during the evaluation was quite large, and each trench contained features with the larger number of features within the larger open area (Trench 3). The most common features were pits (6), and thereafter ditches (2), tree hollows (2) and a post hole (1). The earliest find was a flint scraper from late post-medieval Pit F1031 of possible early Neolithic date. Ditches F1003 and F1005 (Trench 1), Pits F1009 (Trench 2) and F1033 (Trench 3) were undated. Pits F1016 and F1026 contained medieval pottery (late 12th - 14th C). F1026 also contained post-medieval CBM which may be intrusive. The medieval pottery occurred in association with sparse CBM, animal bone and oyster shell. Residual medieval pottery was also contained in Pit F1031 (Trench 3). The remaining dated features, Post Hole F1024 and Pit F1031 contained 18th - 19th century. Advice received on site from SCC AS-CT indicates that the remaining proposed deeper excavations for the development (in particular a large soakaway) should be subject to further archaeological monitoring.
