Abstract:
The results of a desk-based assessment and walkover survey carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) on land at School Hill, Mevagissey, Cornwall, in advance of a planning application. The site is located to the north of the settlement of Mevagissey, flanking one of the minor parish roads that drop down into the village. In the 19th century this land belonged to Lord Edgcumbe and formed part of a tenement described as 'part of Levorrick'. This tenement consisted of a small but discrete block of land with a field barn; the pattern of land tenure, taken together with the character of the historic field boundaries and 16th century references to a 'common fylde', would suggest it was enclosed from a common open field attached to the village, perhaps in the 18th century. The site inspection failed to identify significant archaeological remains within the area of the development. The curving historic field boundary to the north may represent an earlier phase of enclosure, but this lies beyond the site boundary. Monitoring of the topsoil strip for Phase 1 (SWARCH 2016) did not reveal any features of archaeological significance. Thus, despite the fact the site lies within AEL and close to Trewinney Farm, the archaeological potential of this site would actually appear to be fairly low overall.
