Abstract:
Strip, map and record excavation on land for new proposed school following evaluation. Revealed prehistoric remains of considerable significance including the deposition of cultural material in pits during the Middle Neolithic and the Beaker period. The recovery of a Beaker vessel from a feature heavily damaged by machine prior to the start of archaeological works, raises the possibility that the damaged feature was a Beaker inhumation grave from which all the human remains had been lost. Clearer evidence for mortuary activity is indicated by an Early Bronze Age urned cremation burial, and two nearby Middle Bronze Age inhumation burials, as well as other related features. Also of Middle Bronze Age date was a circular post-built structure of uncertain function with central pit feature containing unburnt flint nodules and burnt flint but no in situ burning. Also significant was Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age long avenue of timber post-holes running north-north-west from its closed end just south of the site (as revealed on the adjacent Bishopdown site). A similar post setting on a similar orientation and alignment over 1 km further to the north-north-west may be part of the same structure, representing a major landscape feature. Numerous other post-holes concentrated in east including those of 2 roundhouses of uncertain but probably late prehistoric date and a probable fence-line.
