Abstract:
In June 2017 Archaeological Solutions Ltd. (AS) carried out historic building recording at Widmore Farm, Bradden Lane, Gaddesden Row, to fulfil a condition of planning consent to convert two outbuildings into two cottages. The outbuildings form part of a small courtyard arrangement to the west of the former farmhouse. Buildings 1 and 2 were both built in the 19th century, though each element was part of a distinct campaign of work. The earlier building (Building 1) is a former stable range built in red brick in the mid-19th century. The roof structure is of interest as it is of imported Baltic softwood with a mark specific to the port of Gdansk, typically seen in buildings from the late 18th century to the mid-late 19th century. Building 2 incorporates flintwork walls from an earlier building, but is otherwise all of 19th century date. Its northern units were built in 1890 as a wood store, hen house and open-fronted livestock shelter and are notable in that historic documents including plans and a letter outlining construction details were found within the archive. Both buildings are entirely typical of their function and use and represent small-scale campaigns of works during the 19th century.
