Abstract:
Cornwall's lowland areas probably have the highest archaeological potential in the county, but are poorly understood and increasingly subject to the impacts of major change in land use and development. The Lowland Cornwall project attempted to address this issue by developing a method for predictive modelling of the lowland prehistoric and Romano-British landscape. The project consisted of four stages: preparation of datasets and high level predictive models; deepening or refinement of Historic Landscape Characterisation for 384 square km in four study areas located in distinct parts of Cornwall (Probus, Penwith, Pelynt and Poundstock); further analysis of the archaeological resource and the preparation of predictive models using the refined HLC; and the presentation of final results. Lowland Cornwall generated an enormous amount of data. In order to present the results of the project in an accessible format, the final report was published as five separate volumes: Volume 1 sets out the data used for the analysis; Volume 2 explains the influence of additional factors including soil and geology for site distributions; Volume 3 explains the revised HLC method and its limitations; Volume 4 presents the building of the predictive models based on correlations between site distribution and the refined HLC Types and Sub-Types within the four study areas, to see whether more accurate and precise models could be achieved using the refined HL; Volume 5 provides a conclusion and critique of the analysis and the accuracy of using HLC for statistical modelling.
