Abstract:
A service trench positioned to the east of the Trafalgar Building was partly made through granite cobble setts that were re-laid in modern concrete. A short, red brick wall was seen directly beneath the tarmac surface elsewhere in the trench. This appeared to be contemporary with the Trafalgar building and dating to no earlier than the 20th century. This was surrounded by modern brick demolition rubble that served as ground raising as a precursor to the laying of the tarmac surface of the Victory Arena. In situ granite cobbles were partially observed during the connection of these services to a water main, although significant truncation had occurred from the excavation of a manhole. A service trench excavated to the east of dry dock four showed the modern tarmac surface to directly overlie modern concrete footings, demolition rubble, two pairs of railway tracks and more reset cobbles. The top of a large timber post was also partially exposed. Excavation of postholes for the hoarding to surround the Trafalgar Building observed a red brick wall and floor. These also appeared to be associated with the 20th century building to the north. Granite cobble setts were seen beneath the tarmac surface of the Victory Arena, although these were also seen to be re-laid in modern concrete. The walls were seen to be overlain and abutted by brick demolition rubble that had the appearance of having been deposited as part of the sites landscaping. Postholes excavated through the cobble setts towards the west of the Trafalgar Building also suggested that they had been re-set in modern concrete. Previous truncation as the result of the excavation of a service trench had also disturbed this ground.
