Abstract: |
Excavations on an easement in advance of pipelaying revealed features from a number of phases of activity along the pipe's route. An Early Bronze Age pit containing Beaker pottery was the earliest feature recorded. A segment of linear earthwork (the 'Near Down ditch') and a probable rectilinear enclosure are tentatively prehistoric and possibly later Bronze Age. Two ditches and a negative lynchet were undated. The main finding was that of an unenclosed Bronze Age occupation site consisting of two overlapping post-built roundhouses. Two radiocarbon dates suggest that one of these buildings is of Middle Bronze Age date, but associated pottery appears to be of later Bronze Age/earlier Iron Age date. |
