Abstract:
Cornwall Archaeological Unit was commissioned by Qila Energy to undertake an archaeological watching brief during the initial phase of groundworks associated with the construction of an anaerobic digester/gas injection plant in an area currently used as a large agricultural enclosure to the west of Penans Farm near Grampound. A heritage assessment for the site had been produced by Wardell Armstrong whilst TigerGeo had undertaken a magnetometer survey of the site. The watching brief took place in late August 2016. The topsoil was stripped from the gas injection site and the new approach track under archaeological supervision and the locations of all archaeological features revealed during the process were recorded. These consisted of linear ditch representing the site of an unrecorded field boundary of medieval or post-medieval date and a series of linear features representing evidence for ridge and furrow cultivation. A small, shallow stone-capped pit was found to have been packed with quartz fragments over a layer of charcoal. Where features of this type elsewhere in Cornwall have been scientifically dated these have been found to be either Neolithic or Bronze Age in date; as a result the charcoal deposit was 100% sampled. This material will be subjected to further analysis and dating.
