Abstract:
A programme of archaeological excavation was carried out in advance of the proposed A96 Park and Choose on land located next to Walton Road, Dyce, Aberdeenshire. A previous programme of trial trenching undertaken by Headland Archaeology, had identified a number of archaeological features of probable Iron Age or medieval date. Excavation identified seven prehistoric domestic structures probably dating from the earlier Bronze Age to the Iron Age, with three further probable structures also recorded. Prolonged occupation during these periods was confirmed with phases of structural evidence, and structures rebuilt or replacing pre-existing buildings. Metal working activity was recognised in the form of iron smelting and smithing, with defined areas for these processes in proximity to the domestic remains. Four post structures and alignments of post-holes indicating ancillary structures and/or enclosures were also identified. Later activity from the medieval period was present in the form of pits containing domestic material. A structure, possibly a longhouse or barn of medieval or early post medieval date was also recognised with post-medieval agricultural activity confirmed by two distinct ridge and furrow field systems separated by a sunken trackway. Artefacts recovered included a small quantity of pottery of prehistoric and medieval date and iron metalworking residues indicating smithing and smelting activities. Ecofacts relating to agriculture and domestic activity were also recovered.
