Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks pertaining to the construction of a new community centre. The groundworks comprrised site ground reduction, the excavation of stanchion bases and linking strip foundation trenches, internal strip foundation trenches and the excavation of various services. The archaeological monitoring identified a simple deposit sequence of a topsoil horizon and a natural horizon of cornbrash over the whole area of the development site. The exceptions to this were the cuts of two isolated and undated pits, which were found during the excavation of the foundations for the new build. There were no finds from either feature. The watching brief did not identify any of the anomalies that had been detected by a prior geophysical survey. It is concluded that they must have been of natural geological origin. Although previous archaeological investigations had also identified isolated and clusters of pits of late Bronze Age-mid Iron Age date to the norrth and north-east of this site, and although these two isolated pits that were found by this watching brief may fit into this category, there were no datable finds recovered. This could place this isolated pitting activity found on this site with the prehistoric pitting activity encountered nearby, though they could equally be attributable to a more recent historical period.
