Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology were commissioned by CgMs Consulting on behalf of Hannick Homes and Persimmon Homes to undertake a programme of archaeological field-walking on a c. 84ha area of land forming part of the proposed West Warminster Urban Extension, Wiltshire, centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) ST 85824 45450. This fieldwalking survey was completed across 48.7ha (58% by area) of recently ploughed arable land. A number of fields could not be surveyed as they were either under pasture (15.4ha) or cropped arable fields (19.9ha) which had not been ploughed at the time of the survey. The finds recovered from the fieldwalking survey ranged in date from the Prehistoric to modern period. A single sherd of prehistoric pottery and 49 pieces of worked flint were recovered across the Site. Although no clear concentrations of material were noted, the recovery of knapping debitage in the form of flakes and cores (from which the flakes are derived) accompanied with burnt material infers prehistoric activity in the immediate area. Only seven sherds of Romano-British pottery were recovered and 32 sherds of medieval pottery. The medieval pottery was mainly recovered from the south-western limit of the Site and could infer the location of a settlement close by, although the spreading of the material by manuring is more likely. The majority of the finds are post-medieval in date and concentrated towards the north-eastern limit of the Site. Large quantities of brick and tile suggest manuring activity continued on the site in the post-medieval period. Overall the quantity and type of finds collected are typical of the discoveries expected in this area of west Wiltshire and reaffirm a general background of prehistoric and later activity in the region.
