Abstract: |
The watching brief covered insertion of a combined gateway and stile (Site 2), and replacement of two modern stiles (Sites 1 and 3), on Tredinney Common in Bartinney Nature Reserve. Much of Tredinney Common lies in a SM including one of the best complexes of medieval outfield strips in West Penwith. The long curving hedge cut at Sites 1 and 3 is a pre-Norman parish boundary, possibly documented in the early 10th century, and respecting another parish boundary on the east forming part of a great ring of primary boundaries (Herring 2016a, 194) - tending to support the suggestion the latter defines a prehistoric territory, 'Lescudjack land'. The hedge at Site 1 has a possible early medieval core, interpreted as a 'gurgo' (derelict ancient bank) mapped here in 1778, rebuilt after 1778 and before the tithe survey of 1840. Site 3, on the same boundary, revealed no 'gurgo', probably because this was worn or taken down before 1778 as the plan of that date suggests. At Site 2 a separate field boundary had a distinct core, clearly an early form of it, being associated with a buried ditch in front partly overlain by the present, post-medieval style hedge facing. This core appears to be made of turf or peaty soil, with several clayey patches perhaps added along with the turves when the tired medieval maker's shovel bit into the subsoil before casting up. It resembles the hedge core at Site 1, potentially similar in origin. |
