Abstract:
Archaeology South-East was commissioned by Berkeley Homes (Southern) Ltd to conduct the excavation of 10 trenches, targeted over areas to be impacted upon by the first phase of groundworks associated with the construction of Windrum Close. With the exception of several recent/modern land drains, undisturbed topsoil and subsoil horizons were recorded in nine of the ten trenches and the integrity of the site can therefore be deemed to be for the most part intact. Seven of the ten trenches investigated were devoid of archaeological features and finds. Two archaeological features were identified within the site area, comprising of a north-west to south-east aligned ditch identified in Trenches 57 and 66, and a north-east to south-west aligned ditch identified in Trench 63. Both ditches were sealed by the subsoil horizon, but the date of both is hard to determine as the ditch seen in Trenches 57 and 66 contained no dating evidence, and the ditch in Trench 63 yielded only two very small fragments of pottery of medieval (mid 12th- to early 13th- century ) date. In terms of alignment, it seems likely that the ditch in Trench 57 and 66 is probably contemporary to that in Trench 63 to which it is perpendicular. Topsoil and subsoil horizons across the site yielded fragments of ceramic building material from medieval through to post-medieval.
