Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in January 2012 during works associated with the erection of an agricultural building to the west of Martin Farm, Whiddon Down. The site lies within an area of high prehistoric archaeological activity. Large quantities of prehistoric worked flints have been found to the west of the Farm and a prehistoric settlement site is located in a field immediately to the north of the adjacent farm. In addition Martin Farm is late medieval in origin. It was considered possible that archaeological features and/or artefacts might be exposed during the works. The site area measured approximately 15m by 10m . An archaeologist was present during the excavation of 10 pits measuring 1m x 0.8m and excavated to a maximum depth of 0.7m. No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were found. |
