Abstract:
A survey was carried out, 21-25 August 2017, of the existing roof structure of the bothy to inform proposals to repair the structure. The current roof contains a mixture of timber of differing periods and the survey was intended to identify any original or early structure within the fabric. As the building has historically apparently been raised twice any 'original' roof would have been taken down and rebuilt a few times. The main building structure has been recorded in detail in recent phases of building recording but the roof was not easily accessible during these works. An internal scaffold allowed a detailed survey of the roof timbers. The roof structure proved to relatively late and composed of reused timbers, these mainly from other roofs but also floor joists halved to form rafter pairs; three main phases of works to the roof were identified. Phase 1 - The original roof was largely lost with only two possible timber candidates surviving, these rafters reused as collars. Phase 2 - This formed the bulk of the structure and used salvaged truss pairs from a number of roofs as well as halved floor joists used as rafters. This phase relating to a late reordering of the interior, which involved a reduction from three to two floors. Phase 3 - The mid-20th-century repairs undertaken by the NTS also reusing early roof timbers from another roof.
