Abstract: |
The analytical building survey of Culross Palace in advance of reharling comprised a desk-based study and full drawn stone-by-stone survey of the three elevations stripped off the existing cement harl (N, W and E of North Range). Small-scale roof investigations failed to detect evidence for earlier roofing materials or eaves and verge detailing. Construction breaks and remains of quoining indicate the survival of an earlier structure, incorporated and enlarged by Sir Bruce's remodelling of the North Range in 1611. The earlier building corresponds with the footprint of the existing structure, but was smaller in its S extent. The survey also identified crosswall remains and sillstones that suggest the existence of a stair tower at rear which accessed the hall at attic level in a more elegant manner than the extant internal turnpike stair. A rear stair tower would mirror the West Range, remodelled by Bruce 15 years earlier. Evidence for reset quoins, inserted flues and blocked fireplaces combine to suggest a now lost W extension of similar height than the North Range. Some stones used to block flues and fireplace in the W extension retain plaster and paint - a possible resource for paint analysis, as they were most likely reused from the demolished W extension. Further evidence for remodelling of the Palace's North Range include the removal and rebuilding of the E dormer at rear, the reduction in height of the loading door to the E extension loft and the complete reroofing in pantiles. |
