Abstract:
Land off Heath Road, Burwell, Cambridgeshire, is being considered for the installation of a solar farm. As the proposed development lies in an area of archaeological sensitivity, Cambridgeshire County Council's Historic Environment Team (CHET) requested that the applicant provide information (in the form of an archaeological evaluation) on the potential impact of the proposal on archaeological remains. The evaluation consisted of a desk-based assessment, including an aerial photographic assessment, metal-detecting survey and intrusive trial trench evaluation. The evaluation identified two prehistoric ring-ditches located in the western and south-eastern parts of the site respectively. The western ring-ditch was circular in shape with a large gap or possible entrance in its south-eastern side. Small sherds of late Bronze Age/early Iron Age pottery were retrieved from its upper fills and a cremation burial within the interior was in an urn of probable late Bronze Age date (uncertain as left in situ). No reliable dating material was retrieved from the south-eastern ring-ditch but its oval shape suggests that it might originate in the Neolithic period. No Roman or Anglo-Saxon remains were present on the site. A medieval headland and possible medieval field boundary, as well as post-medieval map evidence, indicate that the site was used for agriculture in the medieval and post-medieval periods. During WWII the southern and south-eastern parts of the site were within the Newmarket Heath airfield. Surviving evidence included a length of the northern concrete taxiway, three loop-type aircraft concrete standings and the metal artefacts largely found in the boneyard area, where aircraft were dismantled in the post-war period.
