Abstract:
This project considers the Historic Environment in respect of a programme of afforestation required by Glenapp Estate to be delivered on a stretch of land between Ballantrae, South Ayrshire and Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway. The study area is located within a mainly upland and coastal landscape. Most of the central and northern parts of the study area are situated between the existing A77 road (which winds within Glen App from Ballantrae in the north to Finnarts Bay in the south) and the coastline. The remainder of the study area lies to the south of Finnarts Bay or to the immediate east of the A77. The individual parcels of land making up the study area consisted of a mix of existing enclosed farmland, areas of existing forestry and open moorland/hill ground with areas of improved fields. There is one historic environment site protected by designation and another fifteen non-designated sites identified within the Glenapp Estate Forestry study area. The assessment and survey works inform conservation management and provide an enhanced record of the sites within the context of the UKFS Historic Environment guidelines. Management guidance would include defined protection areas, compliant with these guidelines.
