Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation and a watching brief in advance of construction works. A recent evaluation of the adjacent area found possible evidence of saltern-related activity in the form of burnt material interleaved with silt layers, although no evidence of saltern structures was recorded. Four evaluation trenches were excavated and the excavation of five geotechnical trial pits was monitored. No archaeological features were identified but a deposit containing small quantities of charcoal and fired clay, which may have derived from saltern-related activity, was recorded in Trial Pit 5. Anomalies identified during a geophysical survey were found to be modern field drains or variations in iron content of the underlying alluvial deposits. |
