Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief carried out during groundworks for the installation of a temporary haul road prior to the construction of an access bridge spanning the M5 motorway to the north of Junction 29 near Exeter in Devonbetween NGRs 297323, 93250 and 296986, 93517. The proposed scheme provides a pedestrian/cycle link spanning the M5 motorway to the north of Junction 29 near Exeter to reconnect Gypsy Hill Land and Blackhorse Lane, restoring a historic Right of Way severed by the construction of the M5 motorway in the 1970s. In order to construct the bridge a number of temporary and permanent works are required. These works will be carried out on both side of the M5 motorway. The location and nature of the works are summarised as follows: Eastern site - Haul Road and Compound a new temporary haul road is required to enable access of construction plant and materials to the bridge site and its associated temporary construction compound. Western site - Gypsy Hill Lane Access and Compound a temporary access track and compound are required at this location to enable bridge construction from the west.
