Abstract:		 Conservation of the monument to Sir John Montagu involved its temporary dismantling, revealing a carefully-constructed stone frame behind, but created using whatever re-useable stonework came to hand. Probable elements of the earlier chancel were included which could not be used elsewhere or were simply left over from the 18th-century chancel rebuilding.
